Why Dunkirk? – An analysis and review of Christopher Nolan\’s Dunkirk Movie Trailer

Christopher Nolan is not just a movie director but, an inspiration for many aspiring filmmakers. He has given us huge, popular and great movies like Inception, The Prestige, Interstellar and The Dark Knight. 

But, despite all different genres Nolan chose, you know two things it had in common? 

Every single movie of his has a different setup and they act like a magnificent canvas over which Nolan paints a greater story.  A story of humanity. A story filled with emotions. Or a story on a deeper understanding of the way human minds and hearts work. 

Despite being a movie with high-end creative concepts like dream-sharing and idea implanting, Inception was focussed on a lonely man who lost his love due to the very same dream-sharing experiment. The Prestige was more about revenge for the loss of loved one than magic itself, Interstellar was more about a father-daughter love as much as it was about inter-galactic travel and gravitational singularities and also, to everyone\’s awe, Dark Knight trilogy was more about a normal man with normal thoughts struggling hard between being a hero and a human rather than about a DC\’s universally acclaimed superhero Batman.

Now, the same Christopher Nolan is back with a war drama, Dunkirk. However, a deeper understanding of the real incidents will reveal that this movie is also going to be about humanity and the power of humanity and the human spirit in times of adversity. 

Dunkirk (actually known as Dunkerque) is a sea-side town in France which had around 300,000 allied soldiers stranded during world war 2 due to mistakes common during the war and was about to be attacked by the dreaded Germans under Hitler and the hopes were completely lost. When there was a small glimmer of hope, a window of three days before Germans could attack them after consolidation, every possible ship out there went to help evacuate these stranded soldiers. And the ships weren\’t just army vessels but, more than 700 fishing boats and private boats too. Even this date, Dunkirk signifies the human spirit in Great Britain and Little ships of Dunkirk personifies the spirit of the people to help fellow countrymen and humans at risk. 

Now, the great artist Nolan has picked this story to be made into a war drama and the man who is known to make inspiring and awe-evoking movies out of science fictions and fantasies will make wonders with this actual story of the human spirit. 

The trailer seems to be portray everything we said above and much more. The grandeur of the World War II looks to be captured splendidly and the aircraft chase looks extraordinarily well shot. And by the way, technically every Christopher Nolan movie is simply brilliant and we feel this movie will take things to next level.

We have great actors Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy (both of them who played critically acclaimed roles in Nolan\’s Dark Knight trilogy) and Sir Mark Rylance too. As expected, Hans Zimmer takes care of the music department, and we are eagerly waiting for the legend to weave his magic once again. 

Also, we hear this Hollywood movie is going to be a triptych. A movie or a story with three different perspectives, land, air and sea and as far as we could see in the trailer, each perspective has its own emotion or character to it, the land (beach) has stranded soldiers waiting for a glimmer of hope. Sea (fishing boats for evacuation) personifies the human spirit and basic human tendency to help and air (fighter planes) the bravery and patriotism.

There have been numerous war movies made so far. But, this one is going to be special and Currently Globally feels this is going to be huge because of one man, the man behind the movie, Christopher Nolan. And let\’s wait until July 21 to see the whole world accepting our views.
