Pelli Choopulu – A Feel Good Rom-Com | Telugu Movie Review
Telugu Cinema is always accused of being stereotyped with colorful dresses for lead actors and fights involving a man beating 50+ of rowdies and even screaming dialogues and too much of glamor.
But, for the last few years, we can see a wave of young directors starting from Sekhar Kammula to bring a change to this perceptions and we have got quality movies coming from Telugu cinema which is well liked by people of other states too. This has led to the stereotype to slowly breaking off and we can see even remakes in other languages based on such quality movies from Telugu.
Pelli Choopulu (Match Making) by Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam is one of such efforts, which is celebrated all over and no wonder that this movie got the \”Best Telugu Film\” national award for 2016.
The story and screenplay are very simple but instantly enjoyable. A lazy boy Prashanth (played by Vijay DevereKonda), who does nothing useful in life, accepts to meets a bride, for the dowry to get settled in life. But, they land in the wrong address and he is struck with the ambitious MBA graduate Chitra (Played by Ritu Varma) in a room.
They speak, share things and after few twists, they land as partners in business. As movie and days pass by, they fall in love with each other and yet, do not profess their love, which is actually usual and expected. But, this usual and expected things provided in an interesting and humorous way make the film instantly relatable and so, likable. Meanwhile, the protagonist is about to be engaged to a successful money-minded businessman\’s (played by Anish Kuruvilla) daughter and Chitra\’s old love decides to visit her to add up to the twists and turns. And as cliched it might sound, whether the girl and boy joined hands or not forms the climax of the story.

Despite the cliched storyline, the movie is fresh because of many reasons. Narration, dialogues, small but interesting details to characters and scenes and most importantly the cast. Ritu Varma as ambitious, clear-headed and outspoken Chitra is simply amazing and she is a talent to watch for. No wonder she is cast by great Gautham Menon for Dhruva Natchathram with Vikram. She deserves it. Her silent smiles that speak more and her dominating and professional looks are worth admiring.
Vijay who plays the protagonist Prashanth is relatable for most of the guys out there who have been forced to and struggled to go through the tedious engineering degree. Also, the actors playing his friends deserve to be mentioned and the gang together makes sure we laugh with their innocent and natural acting.
Both Prashanth\’s and Chitra\’s fathers have played their part to the tee and clearly portray the emotions and irritations of being a father of a son and daughter. (Played by Kedar Shankara and Gururaj Manepalli respectively). Anish Kuruvilla (Director of Aavakkai Oorukai) plays as the potential business-minded father-in-law of Prashanth and he has played his part perfectly and his constant \”What you do?\” question with one of Prashanth\’s friend is hilarious.
Technically, the movie is good with the special mention to the editor Ravi Teja Girijala who has made sure the movie never lags and cuts are clean and never awkward. Music is underplayed and songs are all montages to keep the movie\’s speed intact.
Overall, this movie is a clear entertainer which portrays the nuisances of current fathers at the same makes the youngsters understand them. Also, the movie has an embedded message that, when rightly motivated any \”good-for-nothing\” person could turn into a really successful person. The movie has to be lauded for another important change which is a much welcome change in India that the lead female actor need not be just a motivating factor to the hero but can actually be an independently successful person who in turn motivates the lead actor, when remaining independent herself. And Tharun has to be praised for making sure that this feminist message isn\’t preachy in the movie but is deeply intertwined with Chitra\’s bold and ambitious character.
Go watch the movie if you haven\’t watched yet and let this feel-good entertainer make your day. And we are sure, it will.
