Controversial: Lakshmi – Short Film Review | Sarjun KM | Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli | Best Tamil Short Films

Lakshmi Short Film Lakshmi Priya

Lakshmi short film is the hottest topic in social media. The short film according to its director set to find an answer about bonds that cross thresholds.

Lakshmi\’s storyline can be said as a single question, What if a girl who has always been within boundaries of the society gets a chance to break the barriers?

Taking a controversial topic on hand, Sarjun has provided a really neat presentation and the director\’s touch resembles K. Balanchander at places may be due to the female character. Also, the clear distinction between the mechanical life and the dream life is marked by monochrome and colored versions of events.

Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli as the title character Lakshmi has given her best and it is an understatement to say the popular model/actress has live as Lakshmi and has expressed every feeling a lower-middle-class woman will have in her life. Be it the depressing mundane routine to unsatisfied needs to burning desires, she does every emotion to perfection.

Out of the two male actors, Nandan excels as Kathir and like the character, he is instantly likable with his charm and his dialogue delivery. Leo does a neat job as Sekhar.

Technically, music and cinematography are the other two pillars after Sarjun and Lakshmi Priya for \”Lakshmi\”. Kudos to Sundaramurthy KS for touching background score that blends right into the story. Sudarshan Srinivasan\’s camera work makes wonder with just Canon 5D and there is no shot that is wasted or irrelevant. Special mention to the kid and couple in the same frame during the act and portraying Lakshmi\’s fear when the kid moves.

Few spoilers ahead!

As for the controversies the movie stirred-up, if the film was keenly watched, we would know that Lakshmi and Kathir\’s scenes have happened in flashback and the whole Kathir part is her thoughts on the day she finds her husband has an affair. So, it is not a revenge flick when the wife looks for men outside for teaching husband a lesson.

Another aspect is, by seeing youtube comments and other social media trends, most \”conservative\” audience want the short film to have ended in an alternate way. Like Lakshmi divorcing Sekhar and leading her own life against all odds or Lakshmi confessing to Sekhar and living with Kathir or Lakshmi and Kathir have a meaningful affair sans sex for quite sometime before the final act.

Yes. Sarjun could have done all those things above. But he didn\’t. Because, if he has done that, \”Lakshmi\” would become another compromised shit for the sake of appeasing viewers and you wouldn\’t be talking about it fiercely as you are doing now, with a heavy heart filled with fear and guilt.

Lakshmi – May-not be perfect in few ways but, a tight slap to every male who cares less about his own woman and thinks it is their birthright to make women satiate their needs, be it their stomach\’s or their crotch\’s!
