Aaranya Kaandam | An Analysis | Tamil 2011 Movie
A movie which went unknown. Yet a movie, which inspired many directors.
It was 2011, the year of quality films in Tamil movie era.
Movies like Aadukalam, Deiva Thirumagal, Engeyum Eppothum and Vaagai Sooda Vaa came by and got the critical acclaim they deserve to get.
But, the same year gave Tamil Cinema a legendary piece of cinema called \”Aaranya Kaandam\”.
Directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja and produced by SPB Charan, this masterpiece was left to dust and never was re-released.
The success of a great cinema is a team effort but, it lies foremost in the scripting. Aaranya Kaandam had swept people of feet with this particular factor. It has a fabulous Script which was detailed and characters who are well-etched.
Right from the appearances of the lead characters, their names and their look (which are based on animals. FYI, Aaranya Kaandam means – Jungle chapter ) to background music, everything was planned and the director just had to take the script for shoot.
A small interesting aspect of the characters involved,
Singaperumal which correlates to Lion – Big and lazy. He appears as a lazy, untidy and unshaven guy.
Kajendra/Kajapathi – Elephants – They appear black as elephant.
Kudukapuli – slang for small boys.
Chappa – slang for effeminate guy.
Chittu – Sparrow – Guy with aesthetic sense and a bit of womanizer.
Kaalaiyan – Bull – Depiction of a poor old man who once had everything in life, right from medals to his innocent nature.
Apart from such details, there is an uniqueness towards the way the background music is handled in the cinema. Usual cinematic tones are avoided and a bit of freshness evokes wonder in all of us.
Also, dialogues impact us than anything else in the movie, because, good dialogues stay forever and we hear people uttering them casually. Right from \”I\’ve made an offer he can\’t refuse (Godfather – 1972)\” to \”Naan Oru thadava sonna (Baasha – Tamil Movie – 1995)\”, dialogues stay forever in hearts and minds. Aaranya Kaandam, places itself in the list of such great movies, through its meaningful and crisp dialogues. The dialogue at the end of the movie is a special mention.
Sometimes, circumstances make a man. The young boy is very shrewd, responsible and smart because his dad is not. He has to become responsible/shrewd in order to survive. And the movie reveals its message once you leave the cinemas, and it is, survival of the fittest.
In the jungle, it\’s all about survival.
Every character in the movie is trying to survive despite the odds and against the superior ones\’ dominance and power.
The movie takes us towards the climax to find out who and how they survived.
It is a bit hard to analyze the movie without revealing the entire plot.
However, we have made a small effort in trying to analyze this masterpiece.
