Coffee – Tamil Short Film Review | Currently Globally Best Short Films Review

Most short films made in India cover the one subject which is already beaten blue and black in Indian Mainstream cinema – \”Love\”. However, rarely few gems come across with difference subjects and with an intelligent film-making. Sadly, most of them go unnoticed.

We, at Currently Globally, have made it a point to review and bring to find and review such intelligent and rare works of short films across India. One such intelligent short film is \”Coffee\” by Deepan.

Movies that are based on some sort of disease have always been a hit. And as an Indian, I must accept the fact that I learned Cancer is a severe disease or condition which cannot be easily cured through movies rather than education. Also, if the movie based on not any disease but a psychological condition, it takes the script to next level.

Substance addiction is never an easy concept to treat. But, we always have a misconception that substance addiction is just Tobacco addiction or Alcohol addiction. But, the protagonist in this short film is properly addicted to Coffee. It may be a bit hard to believe, but when you think about the fact that you notice many people, including most of us, get irritated when they don\’t have their coffee on time or the random headaches due to unavailability of coffee. That shows our body and mind starts to rely on coffee a bit much than usual and so, the plot then feels much relatable or believable at least.

Short film script writing is an art that everyone can\’t get. To establish a character and to explain the plot and make it hard-hitting is difficult even for experienced directors when it comes to this microformat. But, Deepan, the director and scriptwriter of \”Coffee\” seems to be great in it.
This short film begins as a monologue of a mentally deranged coffee addict and moves on to the reason why he is in the asylum as a flashback and ends with a shocking twist.

The short film is just 8 minutes but it has a proper intro, a multi-layered character, and a flashback. This shows the prowess the director has and Prathap, who performed as the Protagonist deserves a special mention for his chilling performance and his dedication to the role by the change of looks. Also, he has a strong voice which also makes us believe that he is truly disturbed and relate to the character. Other actors have done their job as expected and the lead female actor seems to have gone over the top a teeny tiny bit.

Technically, the movie is brilliant and music by Raghu Raam is really intimidating and the chants in the BGM builds up the fear and increases the heartbeat. Also, the cinematography by R N Vasantha Kumar is neat and the shots are clean and visually beautiful even when the short film is made completely indoor. The bath scene is one of the examples for that.

In conclusion, the short film is an intelligent piece of the psychological thriller genre and the reality is such pieces of work are critically acclaimed around the globe but, not in our country. The screenplay might have ended with the flashback shock but, having double climax with the actual end makes the movie a little longer but same time hard-hitting.
