It Adhu But Aanal | Tamil short film review | Currently Globally Best Short Films Review

What if your Ex-Girlfriend runs to you desperately and needs a place to stay? What if you chose to make her stay with your current girlfriend? Unthinkable?

This unthinkable thought forms the baseline of the short film \”It Adhu But Aanal\” which roughly translates to \”That\’s it, but wait!\”.

The basic one line of the story is rarely seen and actually unacceptable in Tamilnadu standards but, the screenplay and direction by Sairam Vishwa make sure the film doesn\’t become odd but, totally acceptable and humorous in its own way. Few people might consider this short film to be a bit slow paced owing to its long running time of 49 minutes compared to usual short films but, mind you, this is a telefilm and the concept requires enough detailing.

The casting was excellent and it reduced half the issues a director might go through usually. Vikas M as Anand was splendid and it was a well-written and matured character of the lot. He has portrayed the difficult role with different emotions with ease and this is the character we could easily relate to opposed to any other character of the short film. Next, Malini Jeevarathnam who is a well-known docu-director in youtube circles has done a neat job and well emoted as dominative but brittle Ragini. Gabrella as Harini proves she is a fantastic actor right in the first scene and makes us applaud in the story narration scene.

Now, let\’s move on to the areas which amazed us more than the screenplay.

First, cinematography. This is a short film and it has budget constraints and so, our expectations on the technical aspects were pretty less when we started watching the short film. However, right from the first scene with zoom shot to ruler and pencil to the final shot when car moves and characters are dim in the background, every single shot selection was simply great and we could even confirm in recent times, this short film has the best cinematography.

In particular, the mirror shots are extensive in the film and they are well thought of and well captured and they are actually harder to shoot too. The scene where Ragini picks Harini from the car for the first time and Ragini\’s shot inside the car\’s front mirror, the shot where Ragini and Harini talk sitting before the mirror and also, the shot where Ragini\’s reflection and Harini\’s actual shoulder shot are present during their conversation are all brilliant and Currently Globally applauds Vidhu/Anand for extraordinary shots & cinematography and also, the editor duo Vignesh/Srikanth for the fine job.

Then, the music by Swami easily blends to the situations and carries the scenes in the shoulder rather than over-stepping. BGM is simple but, perfect for the shots and the humming and the song that follows during the very crucial turning point of the short film is perfect and the vocals and rhythm are pleasing for ears and perfect for the concept. Also, the sound mixing by Sainath is perfect and despite most small-budget feature films having a problem in this particular area, \”It Adhu But Aanal\” scores greatly.

Also, to add to the best things, Subtitles is perfect for this short film and words used are beautiful and much better than average tamil film subtitles.

To sum it up, It Adhu But Aanal might seem to be a long watch due to its longer running time, but, it is worth watching and aspiring short film makers should watch it and Currently Globally is sure that you will learn many technical tips from it. Congrats Team!
