(We have a video version of the review here for those who are lazy to read. ) **No Spoilers ahead** Web series is the new and upcoming platform for Tamil and thanks to the globalization through rising of the internet, our young audience has already got their hands on brilliant TV/Web series like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Dark etc. And this has made our expectations in Web series a tad high and so far, in my opinion, there isn\’t any Tamil Tv series deserving a binge watch until, Kallachirippu. Kallachirippu has a simple plotline which can be said in a few lines but, the treatment of the writer-director Roju (aka) Rohit Nandakumar makes sure Kallachirippu is not one another TV series. Along with this brilliant non-linear screenplay, the quirky and catchy dialogues makes his part easier for the audience to get impressed. The very next thing that catches the eye of a common man is the casting, Amrutha Srinivasan as Paapu/Paapa (I better not say her character name) is stunning and proves her versatility in acting with an array of emotions including sarcasm, anger, and vengeance. Roju, the director himself, acts as Indrajit and as far as I know, he has already impressed a lot of girls owing to his dialogue delivery and the brilliant dialogues he wrote for himself. The independence of web series from censorship also helps the cause. For a sample,
\”Athuvaraikkum nee enna pannuva?
Unnai pannuven di!\”
\”Nee yen enakkaga wait pannanum?
Nee un kooda matter panni pathurukiya? Avlo worthu! Usuraye kodukalam\”
Vikas as Ram and Vignesh Shanmugam plays their complicated characters to the T and Vignesh\’s glassy stares and sarcastic laughs to taunt Indrajit is something to be impressed. Saying any more about their characters will reveal the plotline. Also, Paapu\’s parents deserve special mention especially her mother who is an amalgamation of many Tamil mothers who have a broad mindset but are suppressed due to the society\’s and husband\’s expectations.
To come to the technical department, Manikandan as the editor works wonders and he makes sure the non-linear treatment doesn\’t mess up the storyline anyway but, only makes things a tad more interesting than usual. The way the confusing timeline is synchronized in a perfect way is something even many experienced editors of recent Tamil so-called action cinema can learn from this series.
Satish Raghunathan as the music director gives what is absolutely necessary with his own magical touch and special mention to \”O** Omm** song\” placement and the peppiness it exudes. Also, the finale\’s first few minutes\’ scores which remind us of Mounaragam style Ilayaraja sir music.
Dineshkumar Purushothaman, the DoP, does an exemplary work and there is eye-catchy aesthetics in most of the shots, even when they are mostly indoor shots. The house and the studio where most of part of the series happens are immediately likable and kudos to Raju, the art director.
Overall, Kallachirippu is a solid web-series which even can be the benchmark for future Tamil web series and the team deserves a great recognition and we expect many more quality products such as this from them.
Kallachirippu – First binge-watch deserving Tamil Web series.!
