Thota Vilai Enna – Tamil Short Film Review | Currently Globally Best Short Films Review
The word justice has many shades to it and many interpretations to it. To kill someone because he killed someone may be considered as both justice and revenge depends on the people\’s perception.
Also, at times, when the law keepers, the police, take justice into their own hands, perceptions of the justice differs. Nalan Kumaraswamy, who is now popularly known as Soodhu Kavvum Nalan, weaves an amazing short film \”Thota vilai enna\” based on the above concept and let us see Currently Globally\’s review of the same.
We see a psychologically imbalanced young man (Underrated RJ Ramesh) coming forward to accept that he has killed umpteen number of girls and have even recorded their screams when they were murdered. We also have a middle aged policeman who has a college going, daughter taking care of the case.
As the short film goes on, we see how worse the antagonist\’s character is and even we see the character further antagonizing the policemen by saying that the screams of girls when murdered is the eternal music which is far far better than the cheap music we hear nowadays.
Finally, we have the policeman take the decision which feels right to all of us and the decision discussed at the beginning of the story. But, that moment, the story moves on to a different territory and Nalan proves why he is a master filmmaker who Tamil cinema considers as one of the pillars of future. He twists the end and takes the movie to an alternate ending which is deeper and has a meaningful question to all of us.
Technically, the cinematography is good enough for a psychological thriller and the music by R Nandha adds up to the movie\’s overall feel and message.
But, the major success of the short film and what makes this short film believable and impacting is RJ Ramesh Thilak for his realistic portrayal and also, his voice which sounds with menace when required and he is a talented artist who can perform in both the ends of the spectrum. Be it a Psycho in Thota Vilai Enna or comic character in Kaaka Muttai. We wish him to get further wonderful roles and even wish he is utilized in such a character in a feature film.
Finally, we thank Nalan for making us think of what our perception is towards encounters and how the reality is. Also, we are awed by his skills in the screenplay, which made Soodhu Kavvum a grand success. In a shorter format, impact and character perception don\’t occur easily unless you have written such a character which is relatable or understandable. Awesome Nalan.
